The ‘Swarg Systems & Instruments’ apparatus consists of a G. I. pipe, inside which is fitted a copper pipe with longitudinal fins over the periphery. The hot fluid is hot water, which is obtained from water heater. Cold fluid is air, flows over the fins outside the copper tube and hot water flows through the copper tube. Direction of hot water is fixed while direction of air can be changed to operate the unit in parallel or counter flow. Various measurements are provided, which enable students to estimate the performance of heat exchanger, viz. heat transfer coefficient, L M T D and effectiveness of the exchanger.

SPECIFICATIONS
1) Heat exchanger

  • Outer tube G. I., 65 mm NB, 1m long.
  • Inner pipe – Copper pipe 20 mm. O. D. 1m. long 20 mm height longitudinal fins on OD 8 nos.

2) Water heater 3 kw capacity 3 nos. with safety thermostat.
3) Blower of suitable capacity to supply air.
4) Thermometers to measure inlet and outlet temperatures of hot and cold fluids.
5) Orifice and water manometer to measure air flow rate.
6) Measuring flask and stop watch for water flow measurement.

SERVICES REQUIRED
1) 440v, 3ph, supply with earthing connection and neutral.
2) Water supply @ of about 10-15 lit/min.
3) Floor space of 2m x 1m (approx)
